How to Use
Chinese Idiom Master (中文成语大师) helps you learn around 2,000 Chinese idioms — four-character idioms (chengyu) as well as proverbs and maxims — with flashcards and quizzes. The app is free to use (ads are shown). You navigate using the three tabs at the bottom of the screen: Home, Quiz, and My Page.
1. Home — Start learning
The Home tab lists 14 categories such as "Determination & Effort", "Wisdom & Strategy", and "Study & Self-cultivation". Tap a category to start studying the idioms in it.
- The "How to Use" button at the top opens this page anytime.
- Home also links to your bookmarks, learning report, and study calendar.
2. Study (flashcards)
After choosing a category, you can review idioms one by one. There are two display modes:
- List view: see the idioms together in a list.
- Card view: idioms appear one at a time. Tap "Learned" or "Not yet" to record your progress and move to the next card.
Each idiom shows the idiom, pinyin, meaning (literal / figurative), and example sentence. You can also hear the pronunciation with text-to-speech.
- Mark each idiom as "Learned" or "Not yet" to track your progress.
- Use "Not learned only" to focus on idioms you haven't memorized yet.
- You can also search idioms and reset your progress.
3. Quiz
Check what you've learned with multiple-choice quizzes. Before starting, you can set:
- Categories: choose which categories to be quizzed on.
- Number of questions: choose how many questions per quiz.
- Question pool: "All" or "Only questions I got wrong".
- Order: random, or least-asked first.
After answering, the results screen shows your total score, per-category score, and an encouraging message. You can review past quizzes anytime from the quiz history.
4. My Page
- Language: switch the display language between English and Japanese.
- Contact us: send questions, feedback, or bug reports from your device's mail app.
- Terms of Use & Privacy Policy: review the usage terms and how your information is handled.
When is study time counted?
"Today's study time" and "Total study time" are counted only while you have the Study (flashcard) screen or the Quiz (answering / reviewing answers) screen open. Time is not counted while you are just viewing the Home or My Page screens, or while the app is closed (in the background). "Today's study time" resets when the date changes.
About ads
To keep the app free, we show ads. When opening some detailed content (such as flashcard details or quiz answer details), you may see a "Watch an ad to continue" video ad prompt. There is a daily limit on how often ads are shown.
